WHAT IS THE WARM-WATER PROGRAM?
Dive Warriors Warm Water Program is a merit-based system where members put themselves in service to other members of the group and by doing so earn the chance to go away with a group to dive in warm-water locations. Of course all Dive Warriors members are eligible to go to Catalina Island every month and dive, but in order to qualify for the Warm-Water trips more is required.
HOW DO I EARN MY WAY ONTO A WARM-WATER TRIP?
By doing things that help a member of the group or the group in its entirety. Members must show up to events like barbecues, clean the beach events and fund-raisers. They must drive a member who doesn’t have a car to the VA, or help a member move who can’t afford a mover. Anytime a member puts themselves in service to another member of the group (or the veteran community at large) they are working towards a warm-water trip. That is why we tell our members not to be shy about their accomplishments and make sure Board Members are aware of what they do.
HOW ARE MEMBERS SELECTED TO GO ON THESE TRIPS?
Every time the Dive Warriors board of directors meets names are put forward for consideration and voted on to see who has qualified for these trips.
WHY DO I SEE SOME OF THE SAME PEOPLE ON MANY TRIPS?
It is important to remember that these trips are “earned “ not “given away” and that it is possible for a person to go on two trips in a row if that person has devoted themselves to the group more than others have. Also Dive Warriors Staff members are needed to go on these trips. These are Professional Divers to make sure our members stay safe in the water. We always have one staff member for every three members in the water. Lastly, many Staff members have paid their own way on these trips to make room from more members to go and Dive Warriors President Brad Mirman has always paid his own way and will always do so.
HOW THE WARM-WATER PROGRAM WORKS
When you take two veterans with PTSD and put them in the same room for a week something happens. When they have coffee together every morning, breakfast together, do two morning dives together, have lunch together, do two afternoon dives together, have a beer together then have dinner together. When you do this everyday, day after day, deep bonds are formed… trust is earned… and many of our members talk about their disabilities and how it has affected their lives. We have seen firsthand many of our members open up and release years of anger and pain on these trips. These are life-changing moments…
“I was heading down a very dark road before I found Dive Warriors. The warm water program made me feel safe enough to open up about old wounds and share them with my Dive Warriors family. “
